Tom - Glad you liked your job. Maybe I'm wrong, but to me work/camping at my age (63 and retired) means I work the quoted or agreed-to minimum hours to 'earn' your site, and the rest of the time is mine - to sightsee, travel around the area, read all the books I missed reading. I am not looking for, nor would I accept a 40-hour a week job that required me to work 7 nights a week (letting you off 2 nights - maybe).

And to broaden this topic eve more - I think park managers and RV resort owners have a tendency to hire single men before they will hire single women.

I think Workamper News should address the problem. As a former manager, I found that it was often not a "good deal" to get 2 for the price of 1. In some instances, I was forced to take on a poor worker, because their partner was awesome. It works both ways. Singles worked out very well for me, because they were willing to work almost any days, and they didn't need the same days off as a partner or work the same hours as a partner. The cost of an extra site was well worth having these advantages.

Sanjo, thanks for your reply. Solo workers- you can mention these reasons why hiring a solo can be an advantage when talking to employers.

You're welcome, Calamity. I think every person should be evaluated on their own merits. I also lost some couples because one partner decided it wasn't the life for them. I know there are some great couples out there, and kudos to them. I've had some of them. I wish they were all like that, but the truth is, it's not always the case. I good couple is a real find, and we need more of them.

I just finished working for 3 months in two VA state parks. I'm both single AND handicapped, so I was limited as to the type of work I could do. Neither park seemed to mind, and I received good evaluations at both. So I agree with Jaimie--just apply to a lot and sell yourself. :)

Okay, lets say this "Couples only need apply" thing is the wave of the future in workamping. Lets say it may because the campground wants to only give up one rv space.

I have an opportunity for the rv industry. TT and fivers could have private sleeping and living rooms along with private baths. Private quarters for each occupant with a common galley! There are many combinations possible.

This not meant to make light of the situation. It is one of the hats wore in my last life, New Product brainstorming.

I have seen bunkhouse tt's but not anything like this.

I am not sure how to address the financial end of this, but with a little brainstorming we could get some possibilities on paper.

Hi All - it's so interesting to see everyone's view on this topic since I posted it several months ago.

I just was offered and accepted a position on the southern coast of OR for the summer. This was a job posted for a 'couple' but like Calamity Jane says you just need to know how to sell yourself and your qualifications. And yes, one feisty, over-qualified woman can do anything!

To that end, I just wrote a long missive on my blog extolling the benefits and draw-backs of being a solo RVer for the past year you all might enjoy reading it. http://www.myhomeontheroam.blogspot.com. I was even approached to see if I might be interested in writing for an RV magazine. Now wouldn't that be a hoot!

And in closing, after reading the most recent listings, I still think solo workcampers are discriminated against and I don't think it will ever change.

I have been workamping for 4 years now as a single and have found that it is harder to find a job. As if being a single isnt hard enough, try being single with a service dog.I have been lucky and able to find a job that has worked out to be good ones and always hate to leave. Some times it starts out a little rockie but once they see that Kodie is very well behaved things are good.. The jobs are there you just have to work harder to find them..

I don't have strong feelings on this issue but, as you said, the employer gets 2 workers out of an RV site if its a couple. And since the site is costing the employer or they are subsidizing your rent this is an economic issue for them. For example, where we work, some workers stay at a fairly expensive private RV park with the employer paying most of the rent.

Rolling Thunder,
I have seen gooseneck trailers at the Tulsa Fairgrounds that had individual rooms down each side. I think there were five or six on each side. They were filled with men who were working at the fairgrounds. All looked Hispanic. They had a crew cab truck to pull the trailer and a van for the rest of them when they pulled out.
