Speaking of leisurely travels. . .we met a couple at our get acquainted meeting that said they have just started fulltiming. . .they are moving every week. . .sometimes every day. . .they were telling us how in the last month they had visited Dallas, Fort Worth, Granbury. . .I can't even remember all the places they said. I say they haven't really visited any of those places, they just passed through. . .

We told them they need a good month just to see San Antonio, all five of the Missions, not to mention all the surrounding area just filled with German history. . .they didn't even know there were five different missions. They were only staying a week, and thought they had seen all there was to see because they had seen the Alamo.

Anyway. . .how long you think it will take for the new to wear off?

I understand the hitch itch phenomena all too well. . .but moving all the time just wears me out!

Hitch Itch aside, one thing great about working in area for a season, is how familiar one becomes with that area. Years after we have left a particular area local streets and points of interest remain etched in our minds. Its pretty neat to be watching a movie, or something is written, or said about a place which you are very familiar with.

Yesterday we went to a local farm stand that the owners of the campground we are working at told us about. It is way off the main roads, so would never have found it if they had not told us about it. The people there were very excited to see our SD plates and hear our CA accents. They told me how to make kale and collards the VA style and how they cook turnips. They told us to come back in a couple of weeks for fresh picked broccoli. That is one of the reasons we like workamping for a few months or a season - we get to know the locals. Doesn't stop us from getting hitch itch, though. Our summer job is in SC near the Georgia border and we already looking forward to peach orchards.

I think it is sad when we have to leave. We always miss the great friends we have met and hate to have to leave. But there is always next year.

Hitch Itch, gotta love it! We also are new to this term but not the condition. We are really getting a bad case of it now. Been home (sticks & bricks) since mid April so we are far past ready to hit the road again. Have to stay until after the Holidays this year but are leaving in exactly 8 weeks and 5 days (but who's counting?)

After some roaming around the South for a few months we head slightly North for our 1st. work camper position. We are looking forward to getting our feet wet.

Happy Trails,
The Finches

I agree this is the hardest part about workamping. It's great times til you have to pack up and leave. Kind of a double edge sword. I always shed a few tears when good friends leave and or we leave. After we are on the road I am usually OK, but at first it's sad.

Guess if we didn't care we wouldn't feel this way!!!!!!!!!

We think 6 months is a long time to be in one location. We got into workamping to travel and after about 3 months we are ready to move on. Many others we have worked with feel the same way,. Wish more employers would ask for 3 month committments.

As discussed, you may need to hook up with state parks, etc.

I am planning to take to the road for the first time in January. I'm getting hitch itch bad. I can't wait to leave. My fiancee' dosen't seem to have it at all. He is staying home this time, but I was hoping that he would catch it, but i'm not to sure. Any ideas?

Seems like people can be divided into two catagories - those who are perfectly happy and at peace staying within their home community and those who can't wait to see what's around the next curve or over the next hill. My parents were stay-at-homers - guess I was adopted cause I got gypsy blood in my veins and have been blessed with a DH that likes to travel as much as I do.
Can't give you too much encouragement, Crystal, because I don't think people change much in this area. If you are happy travelling without him and he is happy to stay at home and let you go - that may be the compromise that will work for you. If there is any resentment on either side - it won't work. Or maybe he would be comfortable with short trips now and then and okay with you going on longer trips by yourself.

Best wishes to you as the two of you get this worked out.

Thanks. I am leaving in January and plan to be gone for more than four months, so i'll just wait and see how it goes. I don't mind going alone and he is fine with me going alone this time, but i'm not sure how long he will be ok with it. I tried to get him to go on short trips, but he wont take the time off of work. Thank you. -Crystal
